Automatic Washing Machine Shaking Violently or Not Draining? Common Causes & Fixes
· HomesServices Team

Modern front-load and top-load automatic washing machines (such as Samsung, Haier, Dawlance, LG, and Super Asia) make laundry seamless—until the machine begins banging against the wall during its high-speed spin cycle or stops mid-wash with a tub full of dirty soapy water.
When washing machines fail in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, homeowners frequently struggle to diagnose whether the fault is a simple blocked drain filter or an expensive PCB motherboard breakdown. Here is how to diagnose and resolve the two most common washing machine failures.
Issue 1: Machine Vibrates or Shakes Violently on Spin Cycle
If your washing machine starts walking across the floor or makes a violent thumping sound during the rinse and spin phase, check the following:
1. Unbalanced Feet or Slanted Floor
Automatic washers rotate at 800 to 1400 RPM. If one of the four leveling feet is loose or not firmly planted on the floor tile, high centrifugal forces cause violent wobbling. The Fix: Use a spirit level and adjust the locknut on each foot until the unit does not rock when pushed diagonally.
2. Broken or Worn Suspension Damper Rods (Top-Load Units)
Top-load automatic washers suspend the entire inner drum with four spring-damped suspension rods. Over 2 to 4 years of regular laundry loads, the grease dries out or the springs weaken unevenly. The tub knocks loudly against the outer cabinet walls. The Fix: Replacing all four suspension rods simultaneously restores perfect balance.
3. Worn Tub Bearings and Spider Arm (Front-Load Units)
If your front-load machine roars like an airplane taking off during spin, water has breached the tub seal and degraded the heavy-duty ball bearings. The Fix: Bearing replacement and spider bracket inspection before drum misalignment damages the outer tub.
Issue 2: Water Won’t Drain / Machine Halts with Error Codes (E2, OE, 5E)
When the wash cycle finishes but the tub remains full of water, the machine displays a drain error and refuses to unlock the door or begin spinning.
1. Blocked Coin Trap / Lint Filter
Every automatic washing machine features a coin filter located at the bottom-right front panel (on front loaders) or at the drain outlet. Coins, safety pins, hairpins, and lint frequently clog the filter chamber, blocking water discharge. The Fix: Place a shallow tray on the floor, open the emergency drain plug, unscrew the filter counterclockwise, and remove any caught foreign objects.
2. Jammed or Burned Drain Pump Motor
If the filter is clean but you hear a faint humming sound without water being pumped out, a small object (like a coin or button) has seized the drain pump impeller blades, or the 220V pump motor coil has burned out. The Fix: A technician disassembles the pump housing, removes the obstruction, or installs a new universal magnetic drain pump.
Should You Repair the Motherboard (PCB) or Replace the Machine?
When an error code appears (such as power failure, motor drive error, or erratic LED blinking), many service centres immediately recommend buying a new motherboard costing Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000. In reality, over 70% of PCB issues are caused by faulty capacitors, burned relay switches, or corroded solder traces that can be professionally repaired at component level for a fraction of the cost.
